Invisible Children: Mending Uganda
March 11, 2012 by Matt James
It’s day three in Gulu, Uganda, on our recent trip to Central Africa with Invisible Children. The power has been off since arrival, the nights are hot, the mosquitoes are thick and Team Digi is experiencing one of the greatest journeys of our lives.
Our hosts from Invisible Children have packed every moment with scenic tours, cultural lessons and program tours. The third day’s adventure brought us to Mend, a social textile enterprise that rehabilitates vulnerable women and provides opportunity for financial independence. The 23 seamstresses supported by Mend were each abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army to become a child soldiers or sex slaves, but each managed to escape the rebel group.
Today, they're taking steps to rebuild their lives and prepare for the future. Mend provides opportunities like occupational training, literacy classes, health education, and savings programs like Village Savings and Loan. Land is a indicator of wealth in Uganda, and Mend provides education on women's rights to land ownership; now, many women have purchased land as a result of their Mend income.

After an in-depth introduction to Flash CS5 at FlashCamp in Adobe's San Francisco offices last Friday, it occurred to me that some of the most exciting functionality of the upcoming software's release has unfortunately been overshadowed by the Apple/Adobe hubbub of the past few weeks.
