Microsoft Acquires Skype: Smash Hit or Disaster?

Microsoft announced Tuesday that they have acquired Skype. This is huge news, not to mention a nice windfall for 35% owner eBay. There had been serious speculation that Skype would have an IPO this year. But after posting a net loss of $7 million on total net revenues of $860 million, they had still not cracked the profitability model for the business. But after posting a net loss of $7 million on total net revenues of $860 million, they had still not cracked the profitability model for the business. Most of Skype's 668 million registered users were still using the free services, with only 8.8 million users buying into the value-added services.

The End of Facebook?

Let me start with the unthinkable – What if Facebook were to go away? What would people do with those hours a day spent posting, updating and sharing of vacation pictures? Would they all shift to a new platform? If so what platform would it be? YouTube, MySpace, Plaxo? Where would they all go?
