La Jolla Playhouse Wins Big at the Tonys

June 14, 2010 by Reena Leone

Digitaria client, La Jolla Playhouse, had a lot to be excited about this weekend - they won 4 Tony Awards!

Memphis took top honors for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations.

Memphis is a musical set in the 1950s that tells the story of the first white DJ to play black music on the radio. The show features gospel, rhythm & blues and early rock & roll music.

It had already won awards for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Actress in a Musical and Outstanding Orchestrations from Drama Desk. Memphis also won the Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding New Broadway Musical, Outstanding New Score, Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Actress in a Musical.

The critically-acclaimed performance opened on Broadway in October 2009.

To celebrate the nominations, La Jolla Playhouse hosted a Tony Award viewing party featuring Southern BBQ on Sunday night. Digitaria was thrilled to be invited for such a monumental evening. The night included a special tour of La Jolla Playhouse's Prop Garden, a beautiful landscaped outdoor space featuring props from past performances.

The evening concluded with a dress rehearsal of La Jolla Playhouse's upcoming performance, Surf Report, slated to open on June 15th, but not before the crowd erupted at Memphis' 4th, and most significant, win of the night: Best Musical. The full acceptance speech and a performance from the musical can be viewed below - including a specific mention of La Jolla Playhouse.

Congratulations to La Jolla Playhouse and the cast and crew of Memphis!
