Where Tech Meets Art: La Jolla Playhouse gears up for the 3rd annual Innovation Night

September 27, 2010 by Reena Leone

On October 6th, Innovation Night at La Jolla Playhouse will enter its third year of being the go-to event for all those interested in the latest technology that the San Diego area has to offer. This year, Digitaria will co-chair this event that brings together the leaders of bio-tech, high-tech and associated service industries for night of gourmet food, great drinks, amazing networking and world-class theater.

But how did La Jolla Playhouse get involved with Innovation Night?

“San Diego boasts one of the largest bio-tech and high-tech economies in the world, producing major medical, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biologic and wireless products that have led to breakthroughs in healthcare, technology and beyond, said La Jolla Playhouse’s Managing Director Michael S. Rosenberg. The Playhouse is known as the center of cutting edge, innovative theater, inspiring and challenging the artists with whom they work and championing extraordinary new design techniques.”

Innovation Night is one of the best networking opportunities for those in the technology and bio sciences industries. This year’s host committee will include executives from such companies as CONSOR Intellectual Asset, Biogen, UCSD School of Medicine Procopio, Ocera Therapeutic, Square 1 Life Sciences, Orexigen Therapeutics, Solomon Page Life Sciences, with QUALCOMM and BioMed Trust Reality Inc as lead sponsors of the event.

Digitaria’s own Dan Khabie will be co-chairing the event along with Susan Dubé of Cypress Bioscience, Inc. Tim Scott, President of Pharmatek Laboratories and Camille Sobrian, President of CONNECT.

If attending an A-list event and networking aren’t enough, this year, La Jolla Playhouse will host a performance of their brand new musical Limelight; The Story of Charlie Chaplin. From the gritty streets and smoky music halls of London to movie screens across the world, Limelight goes behind the camera to show how Charlie Chaplin found soaring success and later fell from grace. Limelight provides a captivating close-up on the man who changed motion pictures forever.

Limelight writer Thomas Meehan won the 2003 Tony Award for co-writing the book for Hairspray, the 2001 Tony Award for co-writing the book of The Producers, and the 1977 Tony Award for the book of Annie, which was his first Broadway show. Composer and lyricist Christopher Curtis has written for television and film and was signed to the Disney Animation Songwriter program.

The production opened last week to rave reviews. CultureMob called Limelight “a show that is not to be missed- an absolutely delightful musical with a real story to be told.” Pam Kragen of The North County Times called lead actor Robert McClure a “tour de force” and said the production itself  “a wow, with one of the most dazzlingly designed opening numbers I've ever seen.”

Beyond the event itself, Innovation Night’s true purpose to help La Jolla Playhouse continue to bring the best that the arts have to offer to the San Diego.

“Supporting the arts is so important, said Digitaria’s CEO Dan Khabie. We are happy to participate in this wonderful event bringing different innovative industries together for a great cause.”

Last year over $125,000 was raised for La Jolla Playhouse’s education and new play development programs. The event directly supports the Playhouse’s innovation initiatives in new play development and education programs, such as the Page To Stage workshop program, the EDGE series, audience engagement efforts, as well as numerous education and outreach programs in local schools and communities.

Come to Innovation Night, enjoy the party, meet new people, watch an amazing musical, and support the arts.
