Monopoly World Edition: Hasbro

About the Client

Hasbro is a worldwide leader in children’s and family leisure time products and services. Hasbro brands include family favorites such as Transformers, Playskool Tonka, Milton Bradley, Parker Brothers, and many others within their rich portfolio consisting of high quality products. They provide the most recognizable entertainment properties and recreational experiences in the world.

The Challenge

Digitaria was asked to develop a Web site for the "Monopoly Here and Now: World Edition" campaign. The site gave worldwide Monopoly fanatics the opportunity to vote for cities they wanted to be included as real estate property on the game board. Hasbro needed an attractive, user-friendly Web site that could support voting in more than 40 languages. The site also required a secure, highly scalable back-end infrastructure to support the anticipated as well as unforeseen global web traffic. With a limited budget, Hasbro needed a creative solution to successfully execute their worldwide campaign.

Our Solution

Digitaria proposed the use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) to support the Monopoly Here and Now Web site. With an infinitely scalable infrastructure, AWS provided the ability to scale severs within hundreds of instances with little to no time for a fraction of the cost. In Hasbro’s case, leveraging AWS was 1/20th of the cost compared to a traditional data center.

Our Result

Hasbro’s Monopoly “World Edition” campaign was an overwhelming success. By leveraging AWS, the site was protected against large, unforeseen traffic spikes and potential downtime due to incoming worldwide traffic. Millions of game fanatics were able to vote seamlessly for their favorite cities to be incorporated on the Monopoly game board. Locations with the most votes included Montreal, Paris, Hong Kong, London, Rome, Istanbul, and Athens. When controversy arose during the campaign regarding the listing of Jerusalem with the county Israel- which was later picked up by every major news outlet- traffic spiked on the Web site. Digitaria’s recommendation to utilize AWS paid off, adding more capacity to the sites servers easily accommodated the increase in traffic load. The total for the AWS bill turned out to be less than the price of 2 servers.
