YouTube Live
About the Client
Founded in February 2006, YouTube is the leader in online video and the premier destination to watch and share original videos worldwide through a Web experience. YouTube allows people to easily upload and share video clips on www.YouTube.com and across the Internet through Web sites, mobile devices, blogs, and email.
The Challenge
To help recruit new fans and expand its capabilities, YouTube decided to market a live online broadcast featuring some of music's most popular bands and artists. Instead of hosting the event itself, YouTube decided to outsource the project to Digitaria. YouTube needed two things from us: an edgy looking Web site and Flash player, and a highly scalable back-end data center to handle the onslaught of expected traffic.
Our Solution
Instead of setting up a traditional data center at a cost of more than $100,000, Digitaria suggested using Amazon Web Services, a pay-as-you-go cloud-computing solution, at a fraction of the costs. AWS turned out to be the perfect choice for the live event because it allowed Digitaria to allocate as many servers as necessary within the AWS cloud to meet real-time demand. Because Digitaria chose to leverage AWS, YouTube never had to worry about over-planning for the event, setting up too many resources and wasting money, or under-planning for the event and have the site falter. Digitaria used AWS to tune capacity as required from the "war room" it set up during the event. In addition to handling the back-end infrastructure, Digitaria delivered a unique experience for the event which included a custom, multi-channel player that fans used to jump to different camera feeds streamed from the live venue.
Our Result
YouTube Live was a highly successful event. Millions of Internet surfers flocked to the site to watch the two-hour event, generating an estimated 147 million page views. The event generated nearly 700k concurrent video streams, breaking the previous record held by the PGA. The most important part: the event went off without the slightest hiccup. Digitaria's innovative approach virtually guaranteed a seamless user experience, while also providing huge cost savings for the client. At its peak, Digitaria scaled the event to deploy more than 40 large-scale servers within the AWS environment. YouTube was extremely pleased with the results.
