Digitaria Leverages Cloud Computing to Help Major Brands Reduce Campaign Infrastructure Costs by as Much as 95 Percent

Jul 14, 2009

San Diego, CA- Digitaria, a leading digital marketing and technology firm, today announced that it has incorporated infrastructure cloud computing into its innovative solution set to help clients save money and provide better and more scalable online experiences for their customers.

Since early last year, Digitaria has successfully leveraged a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to help a wide variety of brands dramatically reduce marketing campaign infrastructure costs, including hosting large-scale web destinations. For one client, an industry leading online video platform, Digitaria used AWS to run a live, global video event at a 95 percent cost savings compared to buying and setting up hardware in a traditional data center.

Through its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) product, Amazon Web Services provides an infrastructure Web services “platform in the cloud” that enables companies and partners to scale their hosting needs up or down based on real-time demand. The package includes compute power, storage and other services. Infrastructure cloud computing is a subset of cloud computing, which involves providing resources and services over the Internet.

“We are pleased that Digitaria is leveraging Amazon Web Services to deliver to their customers the scalability and cost efficiency they need,” said Steve Rabuchin, Director of Developer Relations and Business Development for Amazon Web Services. “In the current economic climate, many technology teams are being asked to do more with less.  By utilizing AWS, Digitaria is helping to provide solutions to help clients increase cost-efficiencies while providing a more seamless user experience.”

Through its AWS partnership, Digitaria has helped more than two dozen clients reduce project costs by a considerable margin. They include Hasbro, Bravo, NBC Universal, KPBS, Invisible Children and many more.

“We recognized early on before cloud computing became a hot trend that using AWS provided significant advantages in terms of cost, scale and reliability,” said Chuck Phillips, CTO at Digitaria. “AWS is now an core part of our technology services.”

For Hasbro, Digitaria helped launch a global marketing campaign to promote the company’s latest Monopoly game, called “Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition.” This included creating a web site (in 40 languages) that allowed game lovers to vote for their favorite city to be included in the game.

Digitaria used AWS and open source software to produce the back-end infrastructure of the site, saving an estimated 75 percent compared to setting up a traditional data center. Just weeks into the launch, the site received a massive traffic spike due to an unanticipated amount of global press coverage. Thanks to its innovative use of cloud computing, Digitaria was able to easily scale to meet demand. Using a traditional data center, the site would have likely crashed, Phillips said.

“The great benefit of AWS is that it allows you to deploy a web site or application in an elastic environment that stretches to meet your needs,” Phillips said. “As a result, you’re never in danger of over-planning, and wasting resources, or under-planning, and having your site crash because of sudden and unexpected traffic spikes.”
